Neurointerventional Procedures I

NOTE: Course requires a minimal quorum of participants to convene. Please contact the STROKE TRAINING CENTER Administration to confirm course status. Tuition balance is due for payment one month before course is scheduled to begin.

An intensive course designed to teach clinical and technical aspects of interarterial thrombectomy devices to physicians with neurointerventional surgical skills. The role of IA t-PA discussed. Students observe the Erlanger Stroke team perform Emergency Room patient evaluation and neurointerventional procedures in the Angiogram Suite*.

The curriculum includes Instruction Modules and Skills Lab exercises for Medical Imaging techniques and interpretation; as well as Flow Models under fluoroscopy. Lectures also cover hypertension management and platelet assay techniques; clinical care management; and secondary stroke prevention. The five-day option permits extended case review and team participation. Elective lectures are offered in the five-day study option as well. These include elements of Billing and Coding pertinent to interventional procedures, as well as Stroke Center development. Skills labs with Flow Models are open to participants during the five-day study option for further evaluation and exercise.

Physician Qualifications - Attendance limited to (A) experienced interventional radiologists with significant neurological exposure in their practice; or (B) neurointerventionalalists practicing either interventional neurology, neurosurgery, or neuroradiology.

The University of Tennessee College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education credits to physicians.

Two-day option:

* The Erlanger Southeast Regional Stroke Center is among the busiest in the United States. However, the National Stroke Intervention Training Center cannot guarantee on any given day that patients will be admitted for neurointerventional procedures. To maximize observational opportunities, students will be alerted to any neurointerventional cases that may arise during off-hours, in addition to cases that present during times scheduled for instruction.
