Designed for neurologists and other stroke practioners, this course reviews patient treatment options using techniques for rapid determination of stroke pathophysiology both by means of clinical examination and neuro-imaging with CT, CT angiography, CT perfusion, and MR technologies. Techniques to identify patients who should be treated with neurointerventional devices and t-PA will be presented by course Instructors. Significant clinical trials will be reviewed as well.
The curriculum also includes Skills Lab exercises in Medical Imaging techniques and interpretation; clinical care management during neurointerventional procedures and recovery; hypertension management and platelet assay techniques during neurointervention. Secondary stroke prevention is reviewed. Also outlined are Elements of Billing and Coding pertinent to these procedures. Instruction draws upon case studies and observation of the Erlanger Stroke Intervention team*. The five day option permits extended case review and study observation in the Angiogram Suite.

* The Erlanger Southeast Regional Stroke Center is among the busiest in the United States. However, the National Stroke Intervention Training Center cannot guarantee on any given day that patients will be admitted for neurointerventional procedures. To maximize observational opportunities, students will be alerted to any neurointerventional cases that may arise during off-hours, in addition to cases that present during times scheduled for instruction.
